250 Backpacks, One Big Community Smile: The Story of Our 2026 Back-to-School Giveback
On Sunday, August 30, the Aaniin Community Centre in Markham was filled as families arrived ready to celebrate the begining of a new school year. Everyone looked forward to games, activities, refreshments, and quality time together. At the centre of it all stood tables filled with backpacks, school supplies, gifts items, interactive games and more.
For many children, a backpack is more than something to carry books.
It is a fresh start.
It is preparation.
It is confidence.
This year, D’Care Foundation was proud to serve over 250 children at our 2026 Annual Back-to-School Giveback.
Every registered child received a free backpack stocked with school supplies and families on our waitlist still went home with school supplies and won a lot of gifts. Together, we helped children begin the school year feeling ready, supported, and encouraged.
The event began at 10 a.m. and continued until 2 p.m. The morning started with some light rain but everyone that came together brought enough energy to warm up the atmosphere.
Children moved from one activity to another. Parents and guardians connected with one another. Volunteers welcomed families and helped create a smooth and joyful experience for everyone present.
There was something for every age.
There were games for active minds.
There were refreshments for families to enjoy.
There were photo sessions that captured smiles, friendships, and memories from the day.
It was an all-round community experience.
It was engaging, welcoming and filled with positive energy.
Most importantly, it was a space where children and their caregivers could feel seen and supported.
Backpacks That Bring Confidence
The backpack distribution was one of the most meaningful parts of the day.
Over 250 children received backpacks filled with school supplies. Each backpack represented care from the community. Each one helped ease some of the financial pressure that families may experience at the start of a new school year.
We know that caregivers work hard to support children and loved ones. We also know that the cost of school essentials can create added stress for families already managing many responsibilities.
A simple contribution can make a meaningful difference.
A donated notebook matters. A pencil case matters. A backpack matters.
One of the most anticipated moments of the day was the return of Markham Fire and Emergency Services.
They were here again this year as returning community heroes. Their presence brought excitement to the event and created an important opportunity for children and families to learn about fire safety.
The children were thrilled to see them.
The team shared fire safety information in a calm, clear, and welcoming way. Their approach helped children stay focused and comfortable while learning about an important subject.
Safety education does not have to feel frightening. It can be practical. It can be engaging. It can build confidence.
Markham Fire and Emergency Services helped make that possible.

Learning Skills That Can Make a Difference
The day also included a First Aid and CPR workshop for older kids between the ages of 12 and 18.
This workshop gave young participants the opportunity to learn practical emergency response skills. They were introduced to information that can help them respond with greater awareness and confidence when support is needed.
Learning First Aid and CPR empowers young people. It encourages responsibility. It strengthens confidence. It creates a foundation for safer homes, schools, and communities. We are proud of every kid who took part.
Their willingness to learn reflects the purpose of our empowerment programs. We want young people to build skills, discover their strengths, and prepare for meaningful futures.
